In Ayurveda, the concept of calorie counting as we understand it in modern nutrition is not explicitly used. However, the principles of Ayurveda do support the idea of creating a calorie deficit in a more holistic manner to achieve balance and maintain a healthy weight.



Ayurveda recognizes that each person has a unique constitution (Prakriti) and that imbalances in the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) can lead to various health issues, including weight-related problems. Therefore, the approach to achieving a healthy weight in Ayurveda involves personalized dietary and lifestyle recommendations based on an individual's Prakriti and current doshic imbalances (Vikriti).



Here are some Ayurvedic guidelines that can help create a calorie deficit in a balanced way:

Mindful Eating: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of mindful eating. Pay attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues, eat slowly, and avoid distractions while eating. This allows you to better connect with your body's needs and prevent overeating.




Balanced Meals: Focus on balanced meals that include all six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Including these tastes in each meal can help satisfy your senses and reduce cravings for unhealthy foods.



Eat According to Dosha: Foods can either aggravate or pacify certain doshas. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can help you identify the appropriate foods for your constitution and imbalances.

Avoid Overeating: Overeating, even with healthy foods, can lead to weight gain. Ayurveda suggests eating until you are about three-quarters full to leave room for digestion.
