WORLD Arthritis Day

An Ayurveda Approach To OSTEOARTHRITIS
(SANDHIVATA)

World Arthritis Day is observed on October 12th each year to raise awareness about arthritis, a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. According to Ayurveda ,the Vata dosha ,which control mobility and is in charge of maintaining the health of the joints, is principally linked to the aggravation of Osteoarthritis ( SANDHIVATA). Joint discomfort ,inflammation , and decreased joint lubrication are symptoms of a Vata imbalance .

Amavata is a disease in which vitiation of Vata dosha and accumulation of Ama take place in joints, which simulate rheumatoid arthritis in modern parlance.

While Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, offers various remedies for arthritis, it's important to note that these remedies should be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment and under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach to health and well-being, taking into account an individual's unique constitution (Prakriti) and the underlying causes of the disease.

Here are some Ayurvedic remedies and practices that may be beneficial for individuals with arthritis:

  1. Diet: Ayurveda recommends an anti-inflammatory diet to help reduce joint pain and inflammation. This diet typically includes foods like ginger, turmeric, garlic, and green leafy vegetables. Avoiding processed foods, excessive dairy, and foods that can aggravate inflammation (like nightshades) is also important.

  2. Yoga and Exercise: Gentle yoga and stretching exercises can help improve joint flexibility and reduce pain associated with arthritis. Avoid high-impact or strenuous exercises that can worsen the condition.

  3. Herbal Remedies:

    • Turmeric (Curcumin): Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. You can incorporate it into your diet or take turmeric supplements after consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner.

    • Guggul: Guggul is an Ayurvedic resin known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It's often used in the treatment of arthritis.

    • Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that can help reduce stress, which may exacerbate arthritis symptoms.

    • Shallaki (Boswellia): Boswellia resin is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties and is used in Ayurveda to manage joint pain.

    • Rasna : Rasna is believed to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-arthritic properties, which make it useful in managing arthritis and associated joint pain.

    • Lifestyle Modifications: Ayurveda emphasizes a balanced and healthy lifestyle, including stress management, regular sleep, and the avoidance of cold or damp environments.
  1. Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Regular self-massage with warm sesame oil or other prescribed oils can help improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and soothe joint pain.

  2. Panchakarma: Panchakarma is a traditional Ayurvedic detoxification therapy that may be recommended by an Ayurvedic practitioner to remove toxins from the body and alleviate arthritis symptoms.

Remember that Ayurvedic treatments are highly individualized, and what works for one person may not work for another. It's essential to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your specific condition and recommend a tailored treatment plan. Additionally, always consult with your primary healthcare provider, especially if you have a chronic medical condition like arthritis, to ensure that Ayurvedic remedies are used in a complementary and safe manner.
