Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that impact on the normal function of brain, challenging child development particularly in the field of language and communication, social and emotional. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to various health conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While Ayurveda may not offer a cure for autism, it can provide supportive therapies aimed at improving the overall well-being and quality of life for individuals with ASD.

Autism has close similarities to the features of that UNMAD which is described in Ayurveda. UNMAD is a turn that represent broad classes of mental ailments in ayurvedic literature that cover autism. UNMAD is explained in Ayurveda as the derangement in the MANAS ( mental functioning) , BUDDHI ( acquired knowledge), SMRITI (memory), BHAKTI(emotional adhesions) SEELA( conditioned activities), CHESHTA( behavior) and ACHARA (social cultural activities). Among the various type of treatment modalities Yuktivyapashrya Chikitsa plays a vital role in managing the symptoms of autism in children.

Here are some Ayurvedic approaches that are often used:

  1. Dietary Modifications: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of diet in maintaining health and balance. Certain dietary changes may be recommended based on an individual's constitution (dosha). For example, a diet that is calming and nourishing, including warm, easily digestible foods.

  2. Herbal Remedies: Ayurvedic herbs are often used to support overall health and address specific symptoms associated with autism. Herbs such as Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), and Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) Shatavari (Asparagus Racemos),Vacha (Eclipta Alba), Shunti(Zingiber Officinale), Jyotishmati(Calastrus paniculata), Tagar(Valeriana Wallichi), Mandukparni( Centella asiatica),Kushmand (benincasa hispida) Amlaki(Emblics officinale), Bhringraj(Eclipta alba) and Ustakhdus ( lavandula stoechas) are known for their calming and nervine properties and may be recommended in specific formulations.

  3. Ayurvedic Therapies: Various Ayurvedic therapies, such as Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage), Shirodhara (a technique involving pouring of warm oil over the forehead), and Swedana (herbal steam therapy), can help in calming the nervous system and promoting relaxation. These therapies may help reduce sensory sensitivities and improve overall well-being.

  4. Yoga and Meditation: Practices such as yoga and meditation can be beneficial for individuals with autism as they help in calming the mind, improving focus, and reducing stress. Simple yoga asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation techniques can be adapted to suit the needs and abilities of individuals with ASD.

  5. Lifestyle Modifications: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to promote overall well-being. This includes following a regular daily routine (dinacharya), getting adequate rest, and engaging in activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction.

It's important to note that while Ayurveda can offer supportive therapies for individuals with autism, it should be used as a complementary approach alongside conventional treatments. Consulting with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who has experience working with individuals with ASD is advisable to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to individual needs and constitution. Additionally, it's essential to involve healthcare professionals and therapists experienced in working with autism spectrum disorder to ensure comprehensive care.
