"National Allergy Day: Spotlight on Allergy Awareness and Solutions"

World Allergy Day is observed on July 8th each year. It aims to raise awareness about allergies, their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as to educate the public about the impact of allergic diseases on individuals and societies. 

Ayurveda,  offers several preventive and remedial approaches for managing allergies. These approaches focus on balancing the body's doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha) and improving overall immunity.

Common Causes of Allergies 

  1. Pollen: Seasonal allergies are often triggered by pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds.
  2. Dust Mites: Tiny bugs that live in household dust and can cause allergic reactions.
  3. Animal Dander: Proteins found in the skin flakes, saliva, and urine of furry pets.
  4. Mold: Spores from mold can be inhaled and cause allergic reactions.
  5. Food: Common food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.
  6. Insect Stings: Venom from stings can cause allergic reactions.
  7. Medications: Some people are allergic to certain antibiotics or other medications.
  8. Latex: Natural rubber latex can cause allergic reactions in some individuals.


Ayurvedic Preventive Measures for Allergies

  1. Dietary Modifications

    • Kapha-Pacifying Diet: Allergies are often related to an imbalance in the kapha dosha. A kapha-pacifying diet includes light, warm, and easily digestible foods while avoiding heavy, cold, and oily foods.
    • Avoid Allergens: Identify and avoid foods and substances that trigger allergies.
  2. Lifestyle Practices:

    • Daily Routine (Dinacharya): Following a daily routine that includes waking up early, regular exercise, proper hygiene, and adequate sleep can help maintain balance.
    • Seasonal Routine (Ritucharya): Adjusting lifestyle and dietary habits according to the season to stay in harmony with nature.
  3. Herbal Remedies

    • Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Can be consumed as a spice in food or taken as a supplement.
    • Tulsi (Holy Basil): Helps boost immunity and has anti-allergic properties. Can be taken as a tea or supplement.
    • Neem (Azadirachta indica): Known for its detoxifying and immune-boosting properties. Can be used in various forms such as oil, powder, or capsules.
    • Amla (Indian Gooseberry): Rich in vitamin C and helps boost immunity. Can be consumed fresh or as a supplement.

  1. Nasya (Nasal Administration): Using medicated oils like Anu taila or sesame oil in the nostrils to clear sinus congestion and reduce allergic reactions.
  2. Neti (Nasal Irrigation): A practice of cleansing the nasal passages with saline water to remove allergens and improve breathing.
  3. Steam Inhalation: Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil or mint leaves to boiling water and inhaling the steam to clear nasal passages and relieve congestion.
  4. Triphala: A combination of three fruits (Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and Amalaki) that helps in detoxification and improving digestion. It can be taken as a powder or tablet.
  5. Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Can be consumed as tea or added to food to alleviate allergy symptoms.

General Tips

  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking warm water throughout the day helps in flushing out toxins.
  • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to improve circulation and boost immunity.
  • Stress Management: Practices like yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
